Braintree, PayPal's enterprise gateway, an industry-aware payments layer
Braintree is the developer-first, enterprise-grade payment gateway owned by PayPal since 2013. It's the gateway behind Uber, Airbnb, DraftKings, GitHub, Yelp, and hundreds of other large merchants that need clean SDKs, granular control, deep customization, and a single contract for cards + PayPal wallet + Venmo + Pay Later + Apple Pay + Google Pay + ACH. Available in 40+ countries and currencies, Braintree powers card-present and card-not-present flows across North America, Europe, Australia, and select APAC / LATAM markets. What it doesn't give you, on its own, is an ERP-aware B2B payments platform tuned to distributor invoicing, manufacturing milestones, or industry-specific customer portals.
That's the layer Clarity Payment Hub supplies. On top of Braintree's gateway, vault, and multi-method rails, Payment Hub adds branded industry checkout flows, a self-service customer portal tailored to each vertical, Level 2/3 auto-enrichment for commercial-card programs, surcharging, 25+ ERP connectors, and the industry-specific payment pattern (patient payment plans, donor recurring, tuition schedules, membership renewals, subscription dunning), so a distributor on Sage, a clinic on Epicor, a nonprofit on NetSuite, and a school on Oracle all get an experience that matches how their industry buys.
What Braintree owns, authorization, tokenized vault, settlement, marketplace splits, the PayPal / Venmo / Pay Later wallet integration, stays with Braintree. What Payment Hub owns, the industry-specific payment pattern, the ERP posting, the customer-facing portal, extends Braintree into verticals it doesn't focus on natively. Your Braintree merchant account, negotiated rates, and SDK integration all stay exactly as they are.
How Payment Hub connects Braintree to your ERP
Clarity Connect, the integration engine under Payment Hub with 15+ years of active development, reads from and writes to your ERP in real time using each platform's supported API layer, and talks to Braintree via the Braintree GraphQL and REST APIs, Drop-in UI, and hosted fields for in-browser tokenization.
Inbound from ERP
Customers, contacts, open invoices with line items, account balances, credits, payment history, statements, all in real time.
Outbound to ERP
Applied cash receipts, Braintree payment-method tokens, address updates, and Pay-on-Account allocations, posted the moment a customer authorizes payment.
Braintree-side processing
Braintree authorizes, runs risk tools, settles, and funds through your acquirer as usual. Marketplace split disbursements happen inside Braintree. Clarity never inserts a spread or marks up transaction costs.
No ERP modifications
Clarity Connect uses only documented, supported integration points. No schema changes, no ERP-side custom code, no plugins to maintain across upgrades.
For cloud ERPs (NetSuite, Acumatica, Dynamics 365 BC, SAP S/4HANA Cloud) Clarity Connect talks directly to the ERP's cloud APIs. For on-premise ERPs (Dynamics GP/NAV, Sage 100/300, SAP ECC, Oracle EBS, SYSPRO, Epicor P21/Eclipse/Eagle) we use a lightweight outbound-only secure agent that calls from inside your network, no inbound firewall ports to open.

The Missing LinkBetween Paymentsand Your ERP
Clarity Payment Hub closes that gap, connecting your orders, invoices, and payment channels into one flow.
Speak to a Platform ArchitectThe full wallet stack, under one integration
Braintree's signature feature: every major payment method in the U.S. and most global markets, cards, PayPal, Venmo, Pay Later, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, under a single Braintree merchant account. Payment Hub surfaces the subset that matters per vertical.
Cards
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners, UnionPay, including commercial, corporate, and purchasing cards that qualify for Level 2/3 rates.
PayPal Wallet &, Venmo (native)
430M+ active PayPal accounts plus Venmo (U.S.) surface natively in the Braintree checkout, no separate integration, no extra merchant account. Unique to PayPal-owned gateways.
Pay Later (BNPL)
Pay in 4 for smaller tickets, Pay Monthly for larger balances. PayPal finances the buyer and pays the merchant in full up front, zero credit risk to your AR team, surfaced selectively where BNPL lifts close rates.
ACH Direct Debit
U.S. bank-account transfers at the lowest per-transaction cost available for large B2B tickets. Tokenized in the Braintree vault once, re-used in one click forever.
Apple Pay &, Google Pay
Both mobile wallets render inside the Braintree-powered Payment Hub checkout. Wallet transactions flow through Braintree to your acquirer like any tokenized card transaction.
Local payment methods
SEPA Direct Debit, iDEAL, Bancontact, SOFORT, and other local APMs in Braintree's supported European markets. Useful for cross-border subscriptions and international billing.
For large B2B accounts, we commonly hide PayPal, Venmo, and Pay Later by default and set ACH Direct Debit as the preferred method above a configurable dollar threshold, protecting your card-processing economics on seven-figure invoices while still giving customers a one-click experience.
Interchange savings and compliant surcharging
Two of the biggest unit-economics levers in B2B payments, Level 2/3 enhanced data and credit-card surcharging, ship in Payment Hub out of the box on top of Braintree.
Level 2 and Level 3 processing
Level 2 and Level 3 refer to enhanced transaction data (sales tax, customer code, invoice line items, purchase order number, freight, duty, product codes) that the card networks require to qualify large B2B transactions for the lowest interchange tiers. Without this data, B2B card transactions default to the most expensive commercial-card interchange.
Braintree supports Level 2/3 data passing on qualified Visa and Mastercard commercial cards. Clarity Payment Hub pulls the line-item, tax, and customer-code data from your ERP automatically and passes it to Braintree on every eligible transaction. There is nothing for your AR team to key in and nothing for the customer to fill out.
Compliant credit card surcharging
Payment Hub supports compliant credit card surcharging out of the box on Braintree card transactions. The platform handles state-by-state rule enforcement, displays the legally required pre-authorization disclosure, caps the surcharge percentage at the allowed maximum (typically 3% per card network rules), and tracks the surcharge as a separate line in your ERP. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and non-surcharge-eligible cards are excluded automatically.
PayPal-branded wallet transactions follow PayPal's own surcharging policy, so Payment Hub keeps the wallet at the non-surcharged price where PayPal's rules require it. Cash-discount programs are also supported.
Braintree Marketplace and the developer platform
Two Braintree capabilities that don't exist on most gateways, multi-party Marketplace payments and the cleanest developer SDK stack in the space, wired into the industry-aware flow where they matter.
Marketplace split payments
One buyer payment, multiple sub-merchant disbursements. Braintree handles sub-merchant onboarding, KYC, and automatic splits. Payment Hub posts each sub-merchant split to the ERP as individual journal entries in real time.
Clean SDK stack
iOS, Android, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, Node, PHP, Java, .NET, Braintree publishes actively-maintained SDKs for every major platform. Drop-in UI gives a production-ready payment form. Hosted fields give pixel-perfect branding with SAQ A scope.
Fraud &, risk tools
Braintree's risk tools include device fingerprinting, velocity checks, AVS, CVV, and 3D Secure 2 step-up. Premium Fraud Management integrates Kount's AI-based scoring for higher-risk verticals.
Recurring &, subscription engine
Built-in subscription billing with plans, add-ons, discounts, and prorated upgrades/downgrades. Card-updater keeps tokens current. Payment Hub layers industry-aware dunning, retry, and ERP posting on top.
For verticals that need Marketplace, group-practice healthcare with per-provider revenue share, multi-school-district tuition pooling, fundraising platforms that pass through to designated charities, dealer / distributor co-op programs, this is the category-leading capability. For every other vertical, it's just there if you need it later without a gateway migration.
Security, PCI scope, and enterprise compliance
Braintree is PCI DSS Level 1 certified, the highest tier, and operates under PayPal's security and compliance infrastructure. Clarity Payment Hub is built to push your deployment to the lightest compliance scope available.
- Tokenization at Braintree. Every card, bank account, PayPal reference, and Venmo reference is tokenized directly at Braintree's PCI-certified vault. Raw card numbers never touch Payment Hub's infrastructure and never touch your servers.
- Hosted fields + Drop-in UI. Card data is captured inside Braintree-hosted iframes (hosted fields) or the Braintree Drop-in UI so PAN never transits your servers. Either mode qualifies for SAQ A, the lightest PCI self-assessment available.
- 3D Secure 2 + SCA ready. Braintree handles Strong Customer Authentication for European transactions under PSD2 and liability-shift 3DS2 step-up globally. Payment Hub triggers step-up only when Braintree's risk engine flags it.
- SOC 2 Type II. Clarity Ventures operates to SOC 2 Type II standards. Security, availability, confidentiality, and data-handling controls are independently audited on an ongoing basis.
- Fraud controls. Braintree's standard risk tools combine with portal-level controls (invoice-bound authentication, customer-matched billing addresses, single-use signed Quick Pay links) for a defense profile tuned to each vertical, consumer, B2B, or mixed.
- Outbound-only agent for on-premise ERPs. No inbound firewall ports. No VPN tunnel. No public ERP exposure.
Braintree + Payment Hub FAQ
The questions B2B AR, IT, and finance teams ask before rolling out Braintree through Clarity Payment Hub.
Which industries does Braintree + Clarity Payment Hub serve?
Eight verticals out of the box: B2B distribution and wholesale, manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, nonprofit and fundraising, education, government and public sector, professional services and agencies, and subscription / SaaS / membership.
Each vertical gets an industry-aware payment pattern on top of Braintree's enterprise gateway, branded portals, real-time ERP posting, Level 2/3 data enrichment, ACH Direct Debit, tokenized recurring, PayPal + Venmo native, and Braintree Marketplace split payments where applicable. The same 48-hour rollout and 25+ ERP connector library covers every vertical.
How is Braintree different from PayPal Complete Payments?
Both are owned by PayPal and share some infrastructure, but they target different buyers. PayPal Complete Payments (PPCP) is the packaged end-to-end solution PayPal sells to small and mid-market merchants, fast onboarding, broad payment-method coverage, minimal developer work.
Braintree is the developer-first, enterprise-grade gateway used by Uber, Airbnb, DraftKings, GitHub, Yelp, and hundreds of other large merchants, cleanest SDKs in the space, granular control, Marketplace split-payment capability, deep customization, and direct relationships with risk and fraud tools. Clarity Payment Hub works on both, and you can migrate between them without rebuilding the portal, ERP integration, or buyer experience.
Does Braintree support PayPal wallet, Venmo, and Pay Later natively?
Yes, this is Braintree's signature differentiator versus non-PayPal gateways. Because Braintree is PayPal-owned, PayPal wallet, Venmo (U.S.), and PayPal Pay Later (Pay in 4, Pay Monthly) all surface as first-class payment methods in the Braintree-powered checkout without a separate integration.
Clarity Payment Hub renders the complete Braintree method set, cards + PayPal + Venmo + Pay Later + Apple Pay + Google Pay, inside the industry-aware portal, and lets you selectively show or hide each method per vertical, per customer segment, and per invoice threshold.
Does Braintree support ACH and eCheck transactions?
Yes, Braintree supports U.S. ACH Direct Debit through the Braintree vault, as well as SEPA Direct Debit in Europe and local bank-transfer methods in select markets. Clarity Payment Hub exposes ACH as a first-class payment method in the branded portal and the tokenized wallet, which is typically the lowest-cost method for high-dollar B2B invoices.
Bank details are tokenized in the Braintree vault so customers re-use them in one click without re-entering routing and account numbers. Many customers set ACH as the default on invoices over a defined dollar threshold to protect card-processing economics on large tickets.
Can Braintree pass Level 2 and Level 3 data for interchange savings?
Yes. Braintree supports Level 2 and Level 3 enhanced data on qualified Visa and Mastercard commercial-card transactions. Clarity Payment Hub pulls the line-item, tax, and customer-code data from your ERP automatically and passes it to Braintree on every eligible transaction.
B2B merchants commonly save 0.5–1.0% (up to 30% off transaction fees) of each eligible card transaction when Level 2/3 data is passed correctly. On a $50,000 invoice that is $250–$500 of margin preserved, on every transaction.
What is Braintree Marketplace and how does Payment Hub use it?
Braintree Marketplace is the multi-party payments capability for two-sided marketplaces, split payments, sub-merchant onboarding, disbursements, and sub-merchant KYC. It's the infrastructure behind Uber, Airbnb, and similar platforms. Unlike most gateways, Braintree handles the regulatory and operational complexity of splitting one customer payment into multiple sub-merchant disbursements.
Clarity Payment Hub wires this into industry-aware flows that need split payments: group-practice healthcare billing where multiple providers share fees, multi-school-district tuition pooling, fundraising platforms with passthrough giving to designated charities, and dealer/distributor co-op payment splits. The split logic posts back to your ERP as individual journal entries per sub-merchant in real time.
How does Clarity Payment Hub handle Braintree settlements?
Braintree authorizes and settles transactions on its own rails and funds on its own schedule. What Clarity Payment Hub changes is the ERP side: the applied cash receipt is written back to your ERP in real time the moment the customer pays.
There is no overnight batch, no CSV import, and no manual cash application. Invoice status, account balance, and aging reports update immediately in your ERP, which is how the DSO drop and the AR-time savings become real. For Marketplace split payments, each sub-merchant's disbursement posts as a separate journal entry in real time.
What is the integration cost and timeline for Braintree through Payment Hub?
Clarity Payment Hub is packaged software, not a custom build. A typical Braintree + ERP go-live takes 48 hours once Clarity receives ERP sandbox credentials and Braintree API credentials (merchant ID, public/private keys, tokenization key). No new servers, no middleware, no custom code on your ERP.
You keep your Braintree merchant account and your negotiated rates, Clarity does not insert a transaction markup or skim basis points. Implementation is a flat subscription with the ERP integration included.
Is Braintree PCI compliant and how does it affect our own PCI scope?
Braintree is PCI DSS Level 1 certified, the highest tier. Clarity Payment Hub tokenizes cards, ACH accounts, and wallet references directly at Braintree so raw credentials never touch your servers or Clarity's. Hosted fields and Drop-in UI both capture and tokenize data inside Braintree-controlled iframes.
Most deployments qualify for SAQ A, the lightest PCI self-assessment available. That means a dramatically shorter annual compliance review, no cardholder-data environment to audit, and significantly lower risk of breach exposure.
Does Braintree support surcharging and recurring billing?
Yes to both, with one nuance. Payment Hub supports compliant credit card surcharging on Braintree card transactions, state-by-state rules, network caps, and the legally required pre-authorization disclosure are all enforced automatically. PayPal-branded wallet transactions follow PayPal's own surcharging policy, so Payment Hub keeps the wallet at the non-surcharged price where required.
Recurring billing is one of Braintree's strongest capabilities, built-in subscription engine with plans, add-ons, discounts, prorated upgrades/downgrades, and card-updater. Payment Hub layers industry-aware dunning, retry, and ERP posting logic on top.
How does Braintree + Payment Hub compare to Stripe or other modern gateways?
Braintree and Stripe are the two dominant developer-first enterprise gateways in the U.S. market. Braintree's advantages: PayPal + Venmo + Pay Later native (Stripe requires separate setup), Marketplace infrastructure with deeper sub-merchant KYC, and lower pricing on high-volume accounts. Stripe's advantages: slightly more modern API surface, broader international reach in some markets, and faster release cadence on new features.
Clarity Payment Hub works on both, and the industry-aware layer, ERP integration, and customer portal are identical either way. If PayPal / Venmo reach and Marketplace splits matter to your vertical, Braintree is typically the better pick. If global expansion across unusual markets matters more, Stripe can be the better pick.
Can we move to Braintree if we are currently on another gateway?
Yes, and Clarity Payment Hub is designed to make that transition painless. Because Payment Hub is gateway-agnostic, you can port your portal, your ERP integration, your customer accounts, and your buyer UX from your current gateway to Braintree without rebuilding any of them. The only piece that changes is the processor credential. Tokenized cards are re-vaulted at Braintree during migration, and existing subscriptions are recreated with the original billing schedule preserved.
