PayTrace, a gateway built for B2B interchange

Founded in Spokane, WA in 2004, PayTrace was one of the first U.S. gateways to treat B2B commercial-card processing as a first-class problem rather than a consumer-payment afterthought. Twenty years in, that focus still defines the platform.

In March 2022, PayTrace was acquired by North American Bancard: now rebranded as North: and today operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary. The acquisition brought North's processing scale and merchant-services breadth to the platform while preserving the B2B DNA that made PayTrace distinctive. PayTrace currently processes $30B+ in annual transaction volume.

PayTrace's signature capability is interchange optimization. The gateway auto-detects card type on every transaction and, when the card is commercial-eligible, automatically submits the Level 2 and Level 3 enhanced data required by Visa and Mastercard to qualify the transaction for the lowest B2B interchange tiers. For merchants processing meaningful commercial-card volume, this is the difference between standard rates and B2B-qualified rates, often 0.5–1.0% per transaction in margin preserved.

Clarity's role: PayTrace is your gateway and interchange-optimization engine. Clarity Payment Hub is the industry-aware payments layer that sits above PayTrace and reaches into your ERP. Eight verticals supported out of the box. 25+ ERP integrations. 48-hour go-live. PayTrace's rates, merchant account, and Level 2/3 automation stay exactly as they are.

How Payment Hub connects PayTrace to your ERP

Clarity Connect, the integration engine under Payment Hub with 15+ years of active development, reads from and writes to your ERP in real time using each platform's supported API layer. PayTrace stays in control of the transaction. Clarity stays in control of the customer experience and the ERP-side posting.

Inbound from ERP

Customers, contacts, open invoices with line items, account balances, credits, payment history, all in real time. This is what feeds Level 2/3 enhanced data into PayTrace automatically.

Outbound to ERP

Applied cash receipts, tokenized wallet references, address updates, and Pay-on-Account allocations, posted the moment PayTrace confirms authorization. No overnight batch, no CSV import, no manual cash application.

PayTrace-side processing

PayTrace authorizes, settles, funds, and manages the merchant-account relationship as usual. Clarity never inserts a spread, skims a basis point, or touches the transaction economics.

No ERP modifications

Clarity Connect uses only documented, supported integration points on each ERP. No schema changes, no custom code inside the ERP, no plugins that break on the next upgrade.

For cloud ERPs (NetSuite, Acumatica, Dynamics 365 BC, SAP S/4HANA Cloud) Clarity Connect talks directly to the ERP's cloud APIs. For on-premise systems (Dynamics GP/NAV, Sage 100/300, SAP ECC, Oracle EBS, SYSPRO, Epicor P21/Eclipse/Eagle) we use a lightweight outbound-only secure agent that calls from inside your network, no inbound firewall ports to open.

The Missing LinkBetween Paymentsand Your ERP

Clarity Payment Hub closes that gap, connecting your orders, invoices, and payment channels into one flow.

Speak to a Platform Architect

Every payment method your B2B customers need

PayTrace supports the full payment stack a B2B merchant actually uses, cards, ACH, tokenized recurring, with no consumer-payment bloat. Payment Hub surfaces each method in a branded, self-service portal.

Commercial Cards

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, including corporate cards, purchasing cards, and fleet cards that qualify for Level 2/3 rates. Consumer-card transactions run on standard rails automatically.

ACH &, eCheck

U.S. bank-account transfers at the lowest per-transaction cost available for large B2B tickets. Tokenized once, re-used in one click. Recurring and scheduled ACH fully supported.

Virtual Terminal

Secure manual key-in for phone and mail-order payments, plus file-upload batch processing, built into PayTrace and exposed through the Payment Hub portal for AR teams that need it.

Recurring &, Scheduled

Tokenized recurring billing for subscription, auto-pay, and installment schedules. Card- and ACH-based recurring both supported, with retry logic for declined cards and expired account handling.

For large B2B accounts, we commonly configure ACH as the default method above a dollar threshold, protecting your card-processing economics on seven-figure invoices while still giving customers a one-click experience.

Level 2/3 automation and CEDP readiness

Interchange optimization is PayTrace's headline capability, and it's the single biggest unit-economics lever most B2B merchants are leaving on the table. Here's how it works, how much it's worth, and why CEDP matters now.

How PayTrace's Level 2/3 automation works

Level 2 and Level 3 are enhanced data fields the card networks require to qualify large B2B card transactions for the lowest interchange tiers. Level 2 adds sales tax and customer code. Level 3 adds invoice line items, purchase order number, freight, duty, product codes, unit of measure, and more.

Most gateways ignore L2/L3 entirely or require the merchant to key the data in manually. PayTrace does the opposite: every transaction is scored automatically. The gateway identifies whether the card is a consumer or commercial card at authorization time, and on eligible commercial cards, submits the full Level 2/3 payload. Clarity Payment Hub feeds the line-item, tax, and customer-code data from your ERP into PayTrace on every eligible transaction, nothing for your AR team to key, nothing for the customer to fill out.

Worked example: A distributor processing $10M of commercial-card volume at an average ticket of $5,000. Moving from standard commercial interchange to the Level 3-qualified B2B tier at a conservative 0.75% delta = $75,000 in annual margin preserved, with zero change to sales price and zero change to customer experience.

CEDP, Visa's Commercial Enhanced Data Program

Visa is tightening the rules. The Commercial Enhanced Data Program (CEDP) requires higher-quality B2B transaction data to qualify for the lowest interchange tiers. The original April 2025 deadline was extended to October 2025, but the direction is clear: merchants who aren't passing clean enhanced data will lose B2B-qualified rates.

PayTrace is already built for CEDP. The PayTrace Product List feature lets merchants pre-load their full SKU catalog, which is then included as verified enhanced data on every submission. Clarity Payment Hub makes this painless: Payment Hub pulls the actual line-item, SKU, and tax data directly from your ERP on every transaction, no separate catalog to maintain, no manual mapping, no drift between ERP and gateway.

The CEDP implication: merchants who rely on any gateway that requires manual L2/L3 data entry are about to see their B2B interchange rates quietly degrade. PayTrace + Payment Hub is already compliant, already automated, and already sourced from the single source of truth: your ERP.

Surcharging, cash-discount, and tokenized recurring

PayTrace supports the full set of B2B processing-cost strategies merchants actually use. Payment Hub enforces state-by-state compliance, network caps, and clean ERP-side tracking on all of them.

Compliant credit card surcharging

Surcharging shifts the cost of card processing onto the customer when they choose to pay by credit card. PayTrace supports compliant credit card surcharging capped at the 3% network maximum, with debit cards, prepaid cards, and ACH automatically excluded per card network rules. Clarity Payment Hub enforces the state-by-state rule table (some states prohibit surcharging entirely or require specific disclosures), displays the legally required pre-authorization disclosure, and tracks the surcharge as a separate line in your ERP.

Cash-discount programs

The alternative model: the invoice price already includes processing cost, and non-card payment methods (ACH, check) get a discount. PayTrace supports this flow cleanly, and Payment Hub surfaces the discount in the portal checkout. Your choice between surcharging and cash-discount depends on your state, your customers' expectations, and your pricing strategy.

Tokenized recurring billing

PayTrace supports tokenized recurring, installment, and auto-pay schedules for both cards and ACH. Saved payment methods are tokenized at PayTrace, never stored by Clarity, never stored on your servers. Retry logic for declined cards and expired-account handling is built in. Payment Hub exposes the recurring controls to both your AR team and, optionally, to customers who want to manage their own auto-pay from the portal.

Security, PCI scope, and enterprise compliance

PayTrace is a PCI DSS compliant gateway. Clarity Payment Hub is built to push your deployment to the lightest possible compliance scope.

  • Tokenization at PayTrace. Every card and ACH account is tokenized directly in PayTrace's PCI-certified vault. Raw credentials never touch Payment Hub's infrastructure and never touch your servers.
  • SAQ A scope for most merchants. Because cardholder data is captured and stored entirely inside PayTrace's environment, your PCI self-assessment drops to SAQ A, the lightest tier, with no cardholder-data environment to audit.
  • SOC 2 Type II. Clarity Ventures operates to SOC 2 Type II standards. Security, availability, confidentiality, and data-handling controls are independently audited on an ongoing basis.
  • Fraud controls. PayTrace-level AVS, CVV, and velocity checks combine with portal-level controls: invoice-bound authentication, customer-matched billing addresses, single-use signed Quick Pay links. Defense profile tuned to B2B invoice fraud rather than consumer card fraud.
  • Outbound-only agent for on-premise ERPs. No inbound firewall ports. No VPN tunnel. No public ERP exposure.
  • North's backing. PayTrace's 2022 acquisition by North American Bancard brought enterprise security, compliance, and operational resilience to the platform, including the same rigor applied to North's broader processing footprint.

PayTrace + Payment Hub FAQ

The questions B2B AR, IT, and finance teams ask before rolling out PayTrace through Clarity Payment Hub.

What makes PayTrace a good fit for B2B payments?

PayTrace has been built B2B-first since 2004. Its signature capability is Level 2/Level 3 automation, the gateway auto-detects whether a card is consumer or commercial, and automatically submits the enhanced data fields (sales tax, customer code, line items, PO number) on every eligible transaction.

That qualifies your card volume for the lowest B2B interchange tiers without any work from your AR team. PayTrace processes $30B+ in annual volume and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of North (formerly North American Bancard) after the 2022 acquisition.

Which industries does PayTrace + Clarity Payment Hub serve?

Eight verticals out of the box: B2B distribution and wholesale, manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, nonprofit and fundraising, education, government and public sector, professional services and agencies, and subscription / SaaS / membership.

Each vertical gets an industry-aware payment pattern on top of PayTrace's B2B-first gateway, branded portals, real-time ERP posting, Level 2/3 auto-optimization, CEDP-ready data, ACH, surcharging, tokenized recurring, pay-by-link. The same 48-hour rollout and 25+ ERP connector library covers every vertical, so a distributor on Sage, a clinic on Epicor, a nonprofit on NetSuite, and a municipality on Oracle all get an experience that matches how their industry buys.

What is CEDP and is PayTrace ready for it?

CEDP stands for Commercial Enhanced Data Program, Visa's new program that tightens the data-quality requirements for B2B and B2G commercial-card transactions to qualify for lower interchange. Originally slated for April 2025, enforcement was extended to October 2025.

PayTrace is already built for CEDP: the PayTrace Product List feature lets you pre-load your full SKU catalog so each transaction submits high-quality enhanced data automatically. Clarity Payment Hub feeds the line-item data directly from your ERP into that flow, no manual catalog entry, no keying, no re-mapping between ERP and gateway.

Does PayTrace support ACH and eCheck payments?

Yes. PayTrace processes credit card, debit card, and ACH / eCheck, all through the same integration and the same tokenized customer profile. ACH is typically the lowest-cost method for high-dollar B2B invoices, and Payment Hub surfaces it as a first-class option in the portal and tokenized wallet.

Bank details are tokenized at PayTrace so customers re-use them in one click without re-entering routing and account numbers. Recurring and scheduled ACH is fully supported.

Does the PayTrace + Payment Hub integration work across every ERP our industry runs on?

Yes. Payment Hub ships with 25+ ERP connectors covering the systems each of the eight supported verticals typically runs, Sage 50/100/300/X3/Intacct, SAP Business One/ECC/S/4HANA, Epicor Kinetic/Prophet 21/Eclipse/Eagle, Infor SyteLine, SYSPRO, Oracle E-Business Suite, Acumatica, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Dynamics 365 F&O, Dynamics GP, Dynamics NAV, Odoo, Blackbaud, and both QuickBooks Online and Enterprise QuickBooks.

PayTrace stays the gateway, merchant account, and interchange-optimization engine underneath on every one of them. Payment Hub is what makes the experience industry-aware on top, branded portal, line-item data enrichment, ERP posting, recurring logic, regardless of which system your vertical runs on.

Can PayTrace handle credit card surcharging and cash discount programs?

Yes to both. PayTrace supports compliant credit card surcharging (credit cards only, debit, prepaid, and ACH are excluded automatically per card network rules), capped at 3% per network and state.

Clarity Payment Hub enforces state-by-state compliance, displays the required pre-authorization disclosure, and tracks the surcharge as a separate line item in your ERP. Cash-discount programs, where the invoice price already includes processing and non-card methods get a discount, are also supported.

How long does PayTrace integration through Payment Hub take?

Clarity Payment Hub is packaged software, not a custom build. A typical PayTrace + ERP go-live takes 48 hours once Clarity receives ERP sandbox credentials.

You keep your PayTrace merchant account, your negotiated rates, and your existing PayTrace settings, Clarity does not insert a transaction markup or skim basis points. Implementation is a flat subscription with the ERP integration included.

How does PayTrace + Payment Hub compare to an ERP-native payment module?

ERP-native payment modules typically force you onto one processor at rates you cannot negotiate, rarely pass Level 2/3 data automatically, and often provide only a basic payment form rather than a true customer-facing portal. PayTrace + Payment Hub keeps you on PayTrace's interchange-optimized rails, adds a branded self-service buyer experience, and gives your AR team real-time cash application inside the ERP you already run.

ERP-native modules solve for the ERP. PayTrace + Payment Hub solves for the customer experience and your unit economics, which is where AR modernization actually pays back.

Can we move to PayTrace if we are currently on another gateway?

Yes. Because Clarity Payment Hub is gateway-agnostic, you can port your portal, your ERP integration, your customer accounts, and your buyer UX from your current gateway to PayTrace without rebuilding any of them. The only piece that changes is the processor credential. Tokenized wallets are re-vaulted at PayTrace during migration.

For merchants with meaningful commercial-card volume, the Level 2/3 interchange savings often cover the PayTrace implementation cost in the first 90 days post-migration.
