Complications to Solve

The Challenges of C2C Marketplace eCommerce

The primary reason why a consumer doesn't sell something to another consumer is because it's a significant logistical overhead, just the idea of taking an item and getting it ready for shipment and being able to prepare it to fulfill or ship to the other purchasing party. That whole process in and of itself is enough to stop probably 80 to 90 percent of consumer-based sellers that sell physical products.

Making the Process Easier

How Multi-Vendor Marketplaces Can Help C2C Sellers

A marketplace platform can help consumers sell to consumers by facilitating a certain workflow and making it a simple process by setting up resources that consumers can use, including guides with step-by-step processes for selling items. When you build a multi-vendor marketplace, you become the intermediary for them to sell.

By making the process easier and taking the logistical load off the consumer/seller, it makes the idea palatable so that, even if it requires some steps that may take some time, at least those steps are very well explained, and conveyed from a marketing perspective. When you create a multi-vendor website, communication is paramount.

It can be helpful to tell them, for example, that if they list their items and sell them, it’s a lot better than not getting paid for them, and it’s typically only going to take 10 to 15 minutes to take it to the UPS Store and get it packaged to ship. And things can be set up where the seller can get shipping labels and order the appropriate boxes to be delivered to them so they don’t even have to leave their home, and they can order a pick up from an appropriate carrier.

How Multi-Vendor Marketplaces Can Help C2C Sellers

So there are options to really streamline the process of fulfillment through a marketplace that a typical consumer is going to be pretty overwhelmed by. Having guides and resources can be extremely beneficial, and could even include friendly videos from very successful sellers walking community members through, saying, “hey, is this your first time selling something online? We've done this before and it really is just about a two to three minute process to get started. There are these three things you need to do. Here’s what they are… and then your item is ready to go.”

This can be really helpful to get people to list their items in the first place to make it really easy for them, and deal with any mental blocks that they might have in a C2C scenario.

Establishing Credibility

Marketplace Governance Reassures Buyers

Marketplace Governance

Similarly, for the consumers who are purchasing and getting an item, having a governance model in place within the community and marketplace is really powerful. The marketplace can have guarantees, such that the seller may not receive any of the funds until the buyer confirms that it meets their requirements, or that it's been approved or fulfilled as expected, etc. The marketplace can enable a form of escrow or approval process and facilitate any refunds or issue resolution, and enable communication that follows guidelines and reasonable best practices for reconciling any concerns.

The marketplace can do this for the seller and the purchaser in a C2C environment, and this can really help remove any intimidation or concern of being taken advantage of by purchasing something from someone unseen and with really no way of verifying their credibility. So the marketplace can take on that credibility by having certain standards and processes for approving a seller, showing ratings and reviews, number of successful transactions, and any verification so the end purchaser can make a decision about whether or not they want to buy from a certain seller.

In many models, the marketplace will provide an escrow model for a seller until they have a certain number of successful transactions. So we can basically say that—"until you have 100 successful four or greater star reviews within a certain period of time, you won’t receive funds for the product until the buyer confirms they’ve received the order and it was fulfilled as expected; and the buyer might have 14 days to dispute this or let us know of any issues.” That time period may be a two year period that we’re going to count these up in, or it could be a number of months, etc.

And so the marketplace can facilitate following up on this and doing what it can to check in with the buyer, interact and make sure there’s some kind of formal sign-off. These are the types of things that a marketplace can do for a C2C interaction model in order to really tailor the software and make the experience a very positive one for the seller and the buyer.
